Mental health is wealth

This week has been Mental Health Awareness Week, and while it often feels like we are on the precipice of an epidemic of mental health illnesses, it is heartening to see that we are becoming more open to recognizing how quickly these issues can arise and affect anyone.

We live in an ever-changing digital world, full of constant connectivity and stimulation. But where has that brought us? We scroll through TikTok or Facebook without even taking a breath, absorbing twenty situations, adverts, news posts, or nonsense—maybe the news is the biggest nonsense—every minute. We sit at our laptops, on Teams or Zoom, emailing and texting, encased in a private bubble that can all too soon overwhelm us. Kids, particularly, are at even greater risk as they strive to find themselves in a world that is perpetually opening through a lens.

But we are beginning to learn this isn't good, aren't we?

Stop. Take a walk, get into the countryside, and feel the wind on your face. Become closer to nature and appreciate this wonderful world we inhabit.

Be grateful, count your blessings, and discount negative emotions; they don't last long if you don't let them. Make time for yourself and your loved ones; don't give it all to your work or your phone. Reduce your alcohol consumption, eat well, and don't smoke—all good advice for maintaining physical health.

But what about mental health? One emerging and effective method to enhance mental well-being is floating, also known as sensory deprivation or float therapy.

Benefits of Floating for Mental Health

Floating involves lying in a sensory deprivation tank filled with saltwater, which allows you to float effortlessly. The experience is designed to reduce external stimuli and create a state of deep relaxation. Here are some key benefits of floating for mental health:

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Floating can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels. The quiet, dark environment of the float tank helps to lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. This serene setting allows the mind to relax and unwind, providing a reprieve from the constant bombardment of sensory input from our daily lives.

Enhances Mood and Emotional Well-being

Floating has been shown to increase the production of endorphins, the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals. This can lead to enhanced mood and a greater sense of emotional well-being. Regular sessions can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, promoting a more positive outlook on life.

Improves Sleep Quality

Many people who struggle with insomnia or poor sleep find that floating helps them achieve deeper, more restful sleep. The deep relaxation experienced during a float session can help reset the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, leading to improved sleep quality and duration.

Promotes Mindfulness and Mental Clarity

The sensory deprivation environment encourages mindfulness by eliminating external distractions, allowing individuals to focus inward. This can enhance mental clarity, improve concentration, and foster a sense of inner peace. Floating provides an opportunity to practice mindfulness meditation, which has been proven to have numerous mental health benefits.

Alleviates Symptoms of PTSD

For those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), floating can offer significant relief. The deep relaxation and sensory isolation help reduce hyperarousal and hypervigilance, common symptoms of PTSD. Many individuals report a decrease in the severity and frequency of their symptoms after regular float sessions.

Supports Creativity and Problem-solving

The relaxed state achieved during floating can lead to increased creativity and improved problem-solving abilities. The brain's heightened state of relaxation allows for more free-flowing thoughts and the ability to think outside the box. Many people find that they come up with creative solutions to problems or new ideas while floating.

In conclusion, while the digital world continues to evolve and impact our lives, it's crucial to find ways to maintain our mental health. Floating offers a unique and effective method to reduce stress, enhance mood, improve sleep, and foster mental clarity. By incorporating floating into our wellness routine, we can better navigate the challenges of modern life and support our overall mental health.

So, take a break from the screen, step into a float tank, and let your mind and body experience the profound benefits of sensory deprivation.

Your mental health will thank you.
